19.30 Working dinner with Chancellor Angela Merkel in Schloss Meseberg, Germany

President Tusk has started to consult the leaders to prepare the informal meeting at 27 in Bratislava on 16 September. His intention is to consult all leaders ahead of the meeting with a view to discussing both its handling and substance. A number of meetings have been scheduled and confirmed for August and September including the working dinner with Chancellor Merkel. Other confirmed meetings include President Hollande, PM Bettel, PM Kenny, PM May, PM Kučinskis, President Grybauskaitė, PM Rõivas, PM Löfven, PM Muscat and PM Rajoy.

Angela Merkel may be the last politician standing in favour of a European response to the refugee crisis. At this stage she has no choice but to stick to her policy because a change in Germany’s approach would have massive consequences for the EU. If Berlin were to announce a limit to the number of arrivals (as the Austrian government did), or close the borders to migrants (as Sweden did), Schengen would not survive one week. Like in Sweden or in Austria, the German government has to bring down the number of arrivals in 2016. Merkel might not be able to survive another year if immigration continues at 2015 levels. Unlike most other European countries, Germany has to decrease the number of arrivals through a European scheme, even if Berlin is the only actor following this approach.

EVENT HIGHLIGHTS: “Restoring Confidence in the Euro-zone”

On Tuesday 14 May 2013, at the premises of Science14 Atrium in Brussels, PubAffairs Bruxelles hosted a debate concerning the issue of restoring confidence in the eurozone and in the European project in the light of the Cyprus bailout. The event was moderated by Mr Leo Cendrowicz, Brussels correspondent for Time magazine, while the discussants were Mrs Rebecca Harms MEP (Greens) and Mr Markus Ferber MEP (EPP).
