Nuclear plant’s closure part of Macron’s broader energy plan

France has shuttered its oldest nuclear plant, Fessenheim, after four decades in operation. FRANCE 24 environment journalist Valerie Dekimpe says the decision comes amid President Emmanuel Macron’s broader energy strategy to reduce the country’s use of nuclear power from 70 to 50 percent by 2035. While environmentalists have largely cheered the decision, the local economy in particular will be hard hit.
