US election 2020: What’s at stake for US-German relations?

The US election is being closely observed abroad- including in Germany. For decades, Berlin and Washington shared relatively warm relations – that was until 2013 when they were shaken by revelations of American surveillance of Chancellor Angela Merkel. But Donald Trump’s time as president has deepened divisions, and left Germany leading calls for a stronger EU, saying the days of relying on the US are over.
