College members kick off high-level meetings in New York
The EU has kicked off a week of high-level meetings and events during the UN General Assembly in New York.
President Ursula von der Leyen, High Representative/Vice-President Kaja Kallas and Commissioner Síkela, together with the President of the European Council António Costa, represented the EU in a trilateral meeting with the African Union and the United Nations. A joint statement was issued following the meeting. After the trilateral meeting, they also had a meeting with UN Secretary-General António Guterres. The EU is, and will remain, the UN’s largest collective supporter, they reaffirmed. Commissioner Lahbib attended a high-level event on the Political Declaration for the protection of humanitarian aid workers, organised by Australia.
Today, President von der Leyen will deliver a speech at the Global Renewables Summit, focusing on the need to partner, as governments and industry and across the world, to stay the course on global climate goals. Commissioner Jørgensen will also participate in the high-level opening and in a roundtable on renewables at the heart of energy security. In the afternoon, the President, accompanied by Commissioner Šuica, will address the high-level international conference on the two-state solution, hosted by France and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The speeches will be live on EBS.
High Representative/Vice-President Kallas will attend the high-level commemorative meeting of the UN General Assembly, marking the 80th anniversary of the United Nations. She will chair an informal meeting of EU Foreign Ministers. The meeting will be followed by a press conference live on EBS. The Commission will be represented by Commissioner Síkela. In the evening, she will attend a meeting of G7 Foreign Ministers.
Commissioner Šuica will participate in the Annual meeting of the UN General Assembly’s Platform for Women Leaders.
Commissioner Hoekstra will attend the High-Level Solutions Dialogue on Climate Change Adaptation.
Commissioner Síkela will participate in the event Global Africa Business Initiative’s Unstoppable Africa, the Global Education Forum as well as the 2nd Africa Minerals Strategy Group.
Commissioner Lahbib will deliver a speech on behalf of the EU at the High-level meeting of the General Assembly on the 30th anniversary of the Fourth World Conference on Women. You can follow it live on EBS at ca. 14:30 local time (20:30 in Brussels). She will also participate in the event ‘Hunger in the Crossfire: No Time to Spare. Confronting Famine Now’, co-organised with the World Food Programme (WFP) and several other countries. In the evening, she will co-host a dinner with World Economic Forum on the future of aid and development.
Commissioner Brunner will participate in the event ‘Migration at a Crossroads: a Strategic Dialogue for a Changing World’.
Commissioner Jørgensen will participate in the High-level Dialogue on ‘Accelerating the Transition Away from Oil and Gas for Climate, Energy and Economic Security’.
