Commission launches call for evidence on primary EU water legislation

Today, the European Commission launched a four-week call for evidence to support a review and targeted revision of the EU Water Framework Directive, the main piece of EU legislation for protecting and improving the status of Europe’s waters.

A more effective implementation and enforcement of the EU water legislation is a priority to ensure water security and resilience in the EU in line with the Water Resilience Strategy, hand in hand with the EU’s broader resilience agenda. As part of this resilience agenda, as announced in the RESourceEU Action Plan, the Commission is accelerating its efforts to secure the EU’s supply of critical raw materials, to shield industry and supply chains from geopolitical and price shocks. Building on stakeholders’ input and experiences in Member States, the Commission is publishing this call for evidence to examine how to promote circularity and access to critical raw materials in the EU, while protecting the environment and human health.

Open until 14 April, this call for evidence is the first step in this process and will inform the preparation of the review and any subsequent proposals. Stakeholders are encouraged to participate in the online consultation. This includes businesses, civil society, water management companies, Member State and regional authorities, including permitting authorities for projects on critical raw materials and those responsible for ensuring compliance with the Water Framework Directive.
