Commission takes first step toward a stronger EU energy security framework
The European Commission has opened a call for evidence to inform the upcoming revision of the EU’s energy security framework—a key initiative to future-proof Europe’s energy system.
While the current framework has ensured a reliable and stable energy supply, the evolving geopolitical, technological, and climate landscape demands a more resilient and adaptable approach. This revision, mentioned in the Affordable Energy Action Plan, will aim to reinforce the capacity of the EU energy system to anticipate and respond to new challenges.
Planned for adoption early next year, the updated framework will draw on lessons from recent crises and focus on strengthening the EU’s ability to withstand both traditional and emerging threats. Better availability of energy supplies at all time and better preparedness for supply stress periods are pivotal to ensure to EU citizens continued access to affordable energy.
Commissioner for Energy and Housing Dan Jørgensen said: “Europe’s energy system is exposed to new risks, such as cyber-attacks, climate change impacts and a turbulent geopolitical landscape. For energy supplies to remain stable and secure across our continent, we need a stronger and forward-looking EU framework. This review is key to ensure the EU’s energy security not only for today, but also for the future.”
Citizens, professionals and experts are invited to contribute with evidence and insights until 13 October 2025.
