Commissioner Arias Cañete delivers key note on Europe’s energy security challenges to Atlantic Council

On the margins of his high-level visit to the USA, Commissioner Miguel Arias Cañete held a speech at the Atlantic Council on Europe’s energy security challenges: ”La Unión hace la fuerza”. He said: “Today, the global energy map is being redrawn. Global energy demand will increase by over one third by 2040. Much of the growth will come from emerging economies, with China and India alone accounting for half. The European Union meanwhile will decrease our share of global energy demand – from 12% today, to 8% by 2040. But while the overall importance of the EU on global energy markets will decline, global energy markets will be increasingly important for the EU”.
