Commissioner Hansen in Germany to discuss agricultural competitiveness of the agricultural sector and fertiliser security

Today, Commissioner for Agriculture Christophe Hansen attends the AGRA trade fair in Leipzig, Germany, where he is meeting Eastern German farmers’ representatives and regional agriculture ministers to discuss the Commission’s proposals for the future EU’s agricultural policy and the challenges specific to Eastern Germany. In a context of high volatility and high energy prices, tomorrow he will visit Germany’s largest ammonia and urea producer, SKW Stickstoffwerke Piesteritz plant, alongside the head of Saxony-Anhalt, Sven Schulze.

This visit will be the occasion to observe first-hand the EU domestic production of fertilisers and discuss policy measures to enhance fertiliser availability and affordability.

Following recent production cuts due to volatile gas prices, the EU urgently needs stable energy supplies and long-term investment to safeguard Europe’s fertiliser production capacity. The Commission is committed to secure EU fertiliser supply chains while supporting farmers’ competitiveness and sustainability. In that regard, the Commission is preparing its Action Plan on Fertilisers, due later this spring.
