Commissioner Várhelyi holds dialogue on simplifying EU rules for biocidal products
Today Commissioner for Health and Animal Welfare, Olivér Várhelyi is holding an Implementation Dialogue on how to simplify and improve the EU’s legislation on Biocidal Products. Biocidal products control harmful organisms such as viruses, bacteria, fungi, insects, and rodents, and they play a crucial role in protecting human and animal health. Biocides include products such as disinfectants, rat poison, insect repellents and wood preservatives.
The EU’s rules on biocidal products establish a common system for authorising these products, and placing on the market products treated with biocides. The process is in place to ensure risks to humans, animals and the environment are minimised, but it can be complex and costly for companies.
The Commission is starting an evaluation of the Biocidal Products Regulation, to scope its operation and potential improvements, and today’s Implementation Dialogue will mark a first step in that process. The Commissioner will hear what the main obstacles are for companies in the EU when it comes to complying with the rules and together participants explore how these can be overcome. A summary of the dialogue’s conclusions will be published after the event.
