Commissioners Bieńkowska and Jourová at European Consumer Organisation conference on the car sector

Yesterday, both Commissioners spoke at the conference organised by the European Consumer Organisation (BEUC) on the vehicles testing and emission scandal. They reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to make sure European consumers enjoy fair treatment, and set out the important steps already taken to make vehicles more environment-friendly. Commissioner Bieńkowska said: “It is in Volkswagen’s own interest to take action to rebuild trust and credibility. 8 million customers in Europe are still waiting for a remedy and compensation from VW. VW needs to bring cars into conformity for the whole vehicle life cycle without additional costs to consumers.” In her closing remarks, Commissioner Jourová added:  “I want a fair deal for European consumers. VW’s recent commitment to inform consumers and to repair all affected cars with a clear timetable is an important first step, which we will monitor closely. I will continue to work with national enforcement authorities and consumer organisations and support their efforts to obtain compensation.”
