Executive Vice-President Frans Timmermans and Commissioner Virginijus Sinkevičius in Lisbon for the launch of the Lisbon Green Capital 2020

Tomorrow, Executive Vice-President Frans Timmermans and Commissioner Virginijus Sinkevičius will be in Lisbon at the opening ceremony for the city’s year as European Green Capital 2020. The Handover and Opening Ceremony will be a symbolic moment marking the beginning of a year of initiatives in Lisbon and the city’s commitment to the transition towards a sustainable future. Commissioner Sinkevičius will pass the European Green Capital title from Oslo to Lisbon. Executive Vice-President Frans Timmermans will also speak at a Youth Assembly together with UN Secretary General António Guterres, Portuguese Prime Minister António Costa and Mayor of Lisbon Fernando Medina. In the morning, before the ceremony, he will visit the Alcântara’s Wastewater Treatment Plan and attend the inauguration of the interactive art installation “One – the Sea as you never felt before” by Portuguese artist Maya Almeida promoting an immersive experience of Man’s deep connection with the Ocean at the Lisbon Oceanarium. Commissioner Virginijus Sinkevičius will also meet with the Minister for Environment and Climate Action João Pedro Matos Fernandes and the Minister of the Sea Ricardo Serrão Santos.
