President von der Leyen travels to Greenland to deepen the EU-Greenland partnership
On 6-7 September, the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen will travel to Nuuk to advance relations between Greenland and the EU, and discuss topics related to the Arctic’s growing strategic importance. President von der Leyen will meet with the Premier of Greenland, Jens-Frederik Nielsen and the Prime Minister of Denmark, Mette Frederiksen. During the visit she will also meet with the Prime Minister of the Faroe Islands, Beinir Johannesen.
The leaders will notably discuss key challenges and opportunities facing Greenland and the wider Arctic region as well as concrete initiatives to further strengthen bilateral cooperation. In close collaboration with partners, the EU is reviewing its Arctic Policy to ensure that it is equipped to respond to current and future developments.
On Sunday, President von der Leyen will visit the Greenland Ice Sheet by boat together with Premier Nielsen and Prime Minister Frederiksen. On Monday, the three leaders will launch the Enhanced Satellite Connectivity Project for Greenland at Tusass facilities and sign a renewed Joint Declaration by the EU, the Government of Greenland and the Government of Denmark on the relations between the EU and Greenland.
A press conference by President von der Leyen, Premier Nielsen and Prime Minister Frederiksen will take place on Monday 7 September at +/- 14:25 CEST and will be broadcast live on EBS.
Commissioner for International Partnerships, Jozef Síkela, and Special Adviser for EU-Arctic Relations, Jyrki Katainen, will accompany the President.
The mission builds on Commissioner Síkela‘s visit to Greenland in May 2026, during which he participated in the EU-Greenland Policy Dialogue and the Future Greenland 2026 Conference.
