Remarks by President Charles Michel ahead of the EU-Western Balkans meeting in Tirana
This will be an important meeting, a symbolic meeting – the first time that we have an EU-Western Balkans summit here in a country of the region. I am absolutely convinced that the future of our children will be safer and more prosperous with the Western Balkans within the EU, and we are working very hard in order to make progress.
Today, for instance, we will sign an agreement on roaming. This is a concrete achievement, in line with what we discussed in Brdo more than one year ago. It means that for businesses, for people-to-people, for tourism, this is a strong and important step in the right direction.
Another important element is the support that we want to bring to the Western Balkans relationship with the energy crisis and energy difficulties. This is a consequence of the war launched by Russia against Ukraine, and it shows our commitment to strengthen integration and to strengthen cooperation with the region.
Ce moment est important et j’éprouve une certaine émotion parce que, je le mesure bien, c’est la première fois que nous avons dans la région, ici, un sommet entre l’Union européenne et les Balkans occidentaux.
Nous avons beaucoup travaillé ces derniers mois pour faire progresser l’intégration, le rapprochement et la coopération avec la région des Balkans occidentaux. Et, je l’ai dit à plusieurs reprises, je le répète aujourd’hui: je suis absolument convaincu que le futur de l’Europe et de nos enfants sera plus sûr et plus prospère lorsque les Balkans occidentaux feront partie de l’Union européenne.
On progresse, on se rapproche. Il y a des réformes qui sont nécessaires. Nous avons chacun notre responsabilité et cette réunion, aujourd’hui, est une étape sur le chemin de ce rapprochement tangible et concret avec cette région qui est importante pour nous. Je vous remercie.
