The EU and UK formalise agreements on fisheries and energy cooperation
The EU and the UK have taken the required steps to consolidate fisheries and energy cooperation within the framework of the EU-United Kingdom Trade and Cooperation Agreement. Both sides formalised key political agreements reached during the first EU-UK Summit in May 2025.
These agreements provide much needed certainty, stability and predictability for stakeholders on both sides of the Channel. They are an important step towards implementing the Common Understanding on a renewed agenda for EU-United Kingdom cooperation agreed at the Summit.
Today’s formalised agreements include the political agreement on fisheries leading to full reciprocal access to waters beyond 30 June 2026 and until 30 June 2038 (composed by a Decision of the Partnership Council and a Decision of the Specialised Committee on Fisheries), and the political agreement to continuously extend the application of the Trade and Cooperation Agreement’s energy title (composed of a Joint Declaration and Decision of the Partnership Council). The first extension of the energy title will be made until 31 March 2027, after which annual extensions will follow.
The European Commission will continue to follow up swiftly on the other areas of the package identified in the Common Understanding in accordance with the procedures set out in the EU Treaties.
