2024 European elections/Eurobarometer. To begin the countdown to the next European Parliament elections, taking place 6-9 June 2024, Parliament will publish a new public survey. The 2023 Spring Eurobarometer will focus on the support of citizens for democracy and their awareness of the elections as well as on their priorities and perception of the EU (Tuesday).

Lagarde/ECB. The President of the European Central BankChristine Lagarde, will return to Parliament for her quarterly meeting with MEPs on the Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee. Inflation will take centre stage, with MEPs honing in more specifically on the effects of high inflation and monetary policy responses to the real economy, and the interplay between calming inflationary pressures and guaranteeing financial stability (Monday).

2023 European Youth Event. Around 10,000 young people from the EU and beyond will meet in Strasbourg to discuss Europe’s future, against the backdrop of the war in Ukraine and upcoming European elections. President Metsola will open the European Youth Event 2023 (EYE2023) on Friday, and the event will feature more than 300 activities (Friday and Saturday).

Plenary preparations. Political groups will prepare for the 12-15 June plenary session, where MEPs will debate and vote on the Artificial Intelligence Act, on the final report of the inquiry committee on the use of Pegasus and equivalent surveillance spyware, on the water crisis in Europe, on lessons learned from the Pandora papers revelations and on ensuring food security. MEPs will also outline their demands for the 29-30 June EU summit, debate the future of the EU with President of Cyprus Nikos Christodoulides, as part of the “This is Europe” series, and hold a formal sitting with the President of KosovoVijosa Osmani.

President’s diary. European Parliament’s President Roberta Metsola will participate in an exchange of letters between the Parliament and the European Central Bank, together with ECB President Christine Lagarde. On Wednesday, President Metsola will deliver the keynote speech at the Women Political Leaders Summit 2023 “Representation Matters”. On Friday in Strasbourg, the President will visit the European Youth Event following her opening address, and on Saturday will go to Malta to give the introductory remarks at a Wilfred Martens Centre for European Studies ‘Think-In’ event.

Pre-session press briefing. The EP Press Service will hold a press briefing with the Parliament’s political group spokespersons at 11.00 on Friday (Anna Politkovskaya room, press centre, Brussels).
