Juan Fernando López Aguilar served as Spain’s Minister of Justice from 2004 to 2007 and was a member of the Spanish Parliament from 2000 to 2009. He holds a PhD in Law from the University of Bologna (Italy) and is a Professor of Constitutional Law at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (Spain). Mr López Aguilar has been a Member of the European Parliament since 2009. He is the S&D Group’s Coordinator in the Committee on Constitutional Affairs (AFCO) and a member of the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE). He served as Chair of the LIBE Committee from 2009 to 2014 and again from 2019 to 2024. Author of more than fifteen books on various topics relating to Comparative Law, federalism and regionalism, Fundamental Rights, and judicial systems, published in Spain and abroad.
