Mariya Gabriel, a Bulgarian national, is Commissioner for Digital Economy and Society. From 2014 to 2017 she was Vice-President of the EPP Group in the European Parliament, where she was a member of the GERB/EPP (Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria) from 2009 to 2017. From 2012 she was also vice-president of EPP Women. Between 2008 and 2009, before being elected MEP, she was Parliamentary Secretary of the GERB political party in the EPP Group. As Commissioner for the Digital Economy and Society, Mariya Gabriel is involved in several project groups including the implementation of the Digital Single Market, the Energy Union, Better Regulation and Inter-Institutional Affairs, Budget, Human Resources, and Jobs, Growth, Investment and Competitiveness. Its responsibilities include launching ambitious proposals for a digital single market and supporting the development of Europe’s creative, media and content industries, as well as other sectors benefiting from digital research.
