Macovei Monica

Monica Macovei is an MEP representing Romania since 2009. She was awarded the MEP 2012 prize for the most committed parliamentarians in the field of justice and freedom. Monica Macovei has particularly worked on directives and regulations dealing with the “costs of corruption”, freezing and confiscation of criminal assets in the EU, investigative journalists, anti-terrorism and money laundering. As Minister of Justice in Romania between 2004 and 2007, she received international recognition and was widely praised by European and world newspapers for her actions against corruption that enabled Romania to join the EU. Prior to that, Monica Macovei worked with the Council of Europe to promote judicial reforms and human rights in about 25 countries. She has given several public speeches, including at MIT, Harvard, Stanford, Oxford and the Hertie School of Governance.
