The Week Ahead 11 – 17 April 2022

No parliamentary meetings are scheduled in Brussels, as the week is set aside for committee delegations/visits linked to topics falling under their responsibility.

Georgia/Russia’s war against Ukraine. A delegation of the Security and Defence Subcommittee will travel to Georgia to assess the work of the EU Monitoring Mission and the possible implications of Russia’s war against Ukraine in the country. MEPs will meet, among others, Georgia’s President, Prime Minister, Parliament’s Chairman and Defence Minister. They also intend to visit the Administrative Boundary Lines in Abkhazia and South Ossetia regions (Sunday, 10 April, to Thursday).

Bulgaria/Misuse of EU funds. A Budgetary Control Committee delegation will go to Bulgaria to inquire about allegations of corruption and misuse of public funds with a potential impact on the EU’s financial interests. The delegation is scheduled to meet with civil society organisations, investigative journalists, as well as government officials involved in managing EU funds (Monday to Wednesday). A press conference will be held on Wednesday at 11:00 (Brussels time).

Euro-Latin American Parliamentary Assembly. MEPs on the Delegation to the Euro-Latin American Parliamentary Assembly will be in Buenos Aires (Argentina) for the Assembly’s 14th plenary session. Economic recovery, lessons from the COVID-19 pandemic as well as the geopolitical consequences of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine will be some of the topics for discussion with their Latin American counterparts (Monday to Thursday).

India/trade. A delegation of the International Trade Committee travels to Delhi to discuss upcoming trade and investment talks between the EU and India, which are about to restart. MEPs are also expected to discuss pending trade issues and India’s take on the EU-Indo-Pacific strategy (Monday to Wednesday).
