Commissioner Reynders in Tokyo to discuss EU cooperation with Japan on judicial and digital matters, as well as consumer protection
Commissioner for Justice, Didier Reynders, will travel to Japan on Sunday for a series of meetings with government ministers, business leaders, and consumer associations to discuss the major EU initiatives driving the international consumer protection, the international and EU’s digital agenda, the EU’s initiative on corporate sustainability due diligence, as well as the incoming G7 Presidency of Japan.
On Monday, the Commissioner will take part in a roundtable discussion with major business leaders operating in Japan, where he will provide an update on the state of play of the Commission proposal for a Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence directive and of the recent developments in relation to international data flows. Commissioner Reynders will then hold a meeting with Taro Kono, Minister for Digital Transformation, Consumer Affairs and Food Safety to discuss the upcoming application of major EU files, such as the recently proposed consumer package promoting repair and re-use as well as the Digital Services and Digital Markets Act. They will also discuss ways to ensure close cooperation in consumer policy, also in view of launching in the future an Informal Dialogue between the staff of the European Commission and the Consumer Affairs Agency. The Commissioner will also have the opportunity to visit the Panasonic centre on Research and Development on Artificial Intelligence.
On Tuesday, Commissioner Reynders will meet with Mieko Tanno, the chair of the Japanese Personal Information Protection Commission (PPC), in the context of the review of the mutual adequacy arrangement between the EU and Japan. Commissioner Reynders and Mieko Tanno will hold a joint press conference from +/- 11:30 to 12:00 (JPN), followed by a roundtable with consumer associations. Finally, the Commissioner will meet Ken Saito, Minister for Justice of Japan to discuss, among other topics, EU-Japan judicial cooperation, the upcoming G7 summit Presidency of Japan, and more specifically international support to ensure accountability of Russia for Ukraine.
