EU stands in full solidarity with Italy following earthquake

Following earthquakes that struck Italy yesterday evening, Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management Christos Stylianides has issued the following statement: “Several areas in Italy have been struck by earthquakes, including in the same towns that already suffered from a deadly earthquake in August this year. The EU stands in full solidarity with the Italian people and authorities at this time. Right now our thoughts are with all those affected and the first responders working on the scene. The European Commission’s Emergency Response Coordination Centre, which monitors natural disasters 24/7, has been in contact with the national civil protection authorities since yesterday evening. Following a request by the Italian authorities, the EU’s Copernicus Emergency Management Services has already been activated to provide damage assessment satellite maps for the affected areas. We will continue to monitor the situation closely and are ready to provide further assistance.” The statement is available in English and Italian
