About the debate

The competitiveness of the European economy has re-emerged as a strategic priority of the European Union agenda. In the last year, institutional and non-institutional stakeholders have put forward initiatives such as the Antwerp Declaration, the Letta and Draghi reports and proposals such as the Clean Industrial Deal, all signaling the need to strengthen Europe’s industrial base. At the heart of this challenge lies the automotive sector, accounting for 7% of the EU’s GDP and providing around 13 million jobs across the value chain.

However, intensifying global competition is putting considerable pressure on the European automotive ecosystem. European Commission President von der Leyen’s Strategic Dialogue on the Future of the Automotive Industry and the subsequent Action Plan are meant to reinforce the sector’s resilience and accelerate the transition towards a more sustainable EU-wide mobility system.

To truly succeed, Europe needs an inclusive strategy that boosts the competitiveness of all the players across the automotive ecosystem to ensure that the European industry remains a worldwide leader. The tyre industry illustrates this need clearly: from securing raw material supply and affordable energy to promoting the use of consumer labels and efficient circular economy models, it faces cross-cutting challenges that reflect the broader industrial transition.

The Action Plan for the European Automotive Sector offers a platform to address these challenges in a sector-specific way. To support the competitiveness of the European automotive ecosystem, the market needs to be supported towards better performing products, greater clarity is required on in-vehicle data access, the market of secondary raw materials needs to be expanded and to be an integral part of critical raw material strategies.

As it is evident that a sustainable and resilient automotive industry should be based on the active involvement of its wider ecosystem, a continuous dialogue between all stakeholders is necessary to formulate a comprehensive strategy.

This is a public event, hence the Chatham House Rule will not apply.

The event will start at 17.00, while the onsite welcoming at the premises of ACE events will begin at 16.30. The discussion will last around an hour and a half.
